Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee – Arguably the Best Coffee in the World

Jamaica is word famous for many things, reggae music, sandy beaches, Bob Marley and coffee. The high regard for Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee among avid coffee consumers has sent its price up to between $46 and $60 per pound. So, what is it about this particular joe that justifies such a price tag?

True to its name, Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is grown in the Blue Mountain area of Jamaica, generally located between Kingston to the south and Port Maria to the north. Rising to 7,500 feet, the Blue Mountains are the highest point in the Caribbean. The area is characterized by cool, wet weather and rich, dark soil with good drainage, ideal conditions for growing coffee. Although coffee isn’t native to Jamaica, it’s the chief export of the island.

Not any cup of coffee can be called Jamaican Blue Mountain. The Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica certifies every bag of coffe beans to ensure that only beans of the highest quality bear the prestigious trademark. The Board only recognizes beans grown in specific parishes of Jamaica: St Mary, St Andrew, St Thomas and Portland.

The geographical area that cultivates Jamaican blue mountain coffee is quite restricted and can only grow a certain amount of coffee. The limited quantity, the supreme quality resulting from pains-taking cultivation, the alluring aroma and the world-famous name of Jamaican Blue Mountain have no doubt contributed to its fame as one of the most desirable coffees in the world – more so than sumatra coffee, or French roast coffee, for instance. So long as hard-core coffee drinkers continue to covet it, it will be also one of the most expensive.
