Karl May stories and movies have an enthused group of followers in and outside of Europe
The author Karl Friedrich May belongs to the group of most famous German authors of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He was given birth to on 02/25/1842 and perished on 03/30/1912. More than two hundred million pieces of Karl Friedrich May’s novels were bought around the world. The most renowned heroes of Karl Friedrich May’s works are Winnetou and Old Shatterhand. Winnetou is the clever chief of the Apache Tribe, and Old Shatterhand is his white companion.
Between 1912 and 1968 there were published exceeding 22 films following Karl May’s books. The American performer Lex Barker became very renowned for playing the role of Old Shatterhand. Another well-known Karl May character is Old Shurehand. The British actor Stewart Granger played the role of Old Shurehand in 3 movies. Those movies were quite successful, although partially only imprecisely reflecting the original Karl F. May works.
The Karl Friedrich May novels have been translated into at least forty languages and have been released in many countries. They are successful even in countries like Mexico and Hungary. Karl May wrote the first three Winnetou books and the three Old Shurehand books between 1893 and 1897. They are set in the grand Wild West of America. Surptising is the matter that Karl Friedrich May’s first tour to America occured in 1908. This voyage took him to Albany, Buffalo and the Niagara Falls, but not farther to the West. Thus his famous books originated from imagination, creativity and factual sources like maps, guide books and travel accounts, as well as linguistic studies.
