San Pedro de Alcantara Locksmiths and Cerrajeros

Isn’t it strange how much faith we place in something as basic as simple door lock and the panic that can ensue when a key is lost. These are thoughts that crossed my mind just the other day while waiting to have a set of keys cut in a San Pedro de Alcantara locksmith (cerrajero). I have to say that the reading material locksmiths provide while waiting is not up to the standards of the doctors surgery, however out of boredom I picked up a copy of the imaginatively named magazine ‘The Locksmith’.

A very safe deposit box

One article recounts the security measures put in place in India during the days of the Emperor of Annam, where valuables sealed in watertight wooden safes were submerged in pools. The pools were guarded by a number of crocodiles deliberately kept on starvation diets so they were always hungry. The only legitimate way to deposit or retrieve valuables was to first drug the crocodiles, to venture into the water at any other time would almost certainly lead to the demise of intruder.

There were no Secrets in old San Pedro de Alcantara

Several centuries ago, in San Pedro de Alcantara and throughout mainland Spain, there was a great distrust of locks. To be safe, the householders would collectively hire a watchman to patrol the neighbourhood and guard their keys. The residents summoned the watchman by shouting and clapping their hands, eventually the watchman would appear with the keys to their dwellings allowing them to enter or leave. Thus the movements of residents became a matter of public record leaving little opportunity for “hanky panky” in old San Pedro.
