Pest control in Rochdale, Oldham and Bury 2010
Pest and vermin control in Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester has seen a lively start this year which is unexpected given the relatively cold winter of 2009/10.
Pest and vermin operatives were kept busy with the usual city centre rodent calls throughout the winter of 2009/10, but the relatively cold early part of the year has already brought some ant infestations reported.
The fairly wet summers of 2008 and 2009 were not to the taste of the hymenoptera (sawflies, wasps, ants & bees) but 2010 looks like being a busy year for flying ant callouts.
Regularly ants build nests under the floors of buildings and inside cavity walls causing a large number of foraging ants to visit kitchens and food cupboards.
However it is at mating time when they can be most annoying as they produce winged queens and males which then fly off to mate.
The appearance of several thousands of these winged ants inside your home can be horrible indeed.
A relatively new pest was quite troublesome in the Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester area last season, the Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci).
It was rare for pest controllers in Lancashire, Manchester and Cheshire to deal with these pests until lately but they seemed to appear from nowhere in 2008 and already this year has seen reports of these beetles in unprecedented numbers.
Having a similar life cycle to moths their larvae, called woolly bears eat natural fibres and can do substantial damage to carpets and some fabrics. They can be a difficult and tricky pest to eradicate.
Bed Bugs are continuing their renaissance in the Lancashire, Manchester and Cheshire area, often arriving as hitch-hikers in the suitcases of returning travellers.
Often the first reaction of unfortunates who realise that they have been infested with these horrible,blood-sucking pests is to get rid of the old beds and purchase.
This is a costly mistake as despite their name bed bugs do not just live in beds and in an infested bedroom will be found everywhere within about fifteen feet of the bed, in cupboards, drawers etc, even in electrical and telephone sockets and the new beds are instantly re-infested.
Most people mistake bed bugs with dust mites which are not visible to the naked eye.
They dine only on blood which they take from their sleeping hosts. People regularly associate bed bugs with dirty conditions but nothing could be further from the truth, they do not need dirt, their food is you!
