Just what I Learned From My Initial Encounter With Recording

A number of years ago, I recorded a CD of my own songs with a friend who had built his own recording studio. He told me to take all the time that i need to record my songs and to gain more experience he also volunteered to mix the music for me.

I had recorded simple demos before using an aged four-track cassette recorder, but this was my first official recording experience. Digital recording was an innovative idea, and my friend had one of the first set-ups for recording direct to PC hard drive. It was an indescribable experience. I observed in awe how my friend edited my recording by doing the vocals, adding the instrumentals, and record multiple tracks. While my friend is busy with the mixing and editing I watched and paid interest to what he is doing. He would explain different parts of the process to me, answering my constant, pesky questions. Collectively we created a recording we can both be very pleased of.

I never expected my first recording encounter can be of great help until I was placed in a scenario where I need to use my knowledge on digital recording. The first one was as a small-time musician, in hosting events where there was no audio engineer or sound person; if I wanted to make it sound good, it was up to me. I was surprised at how I was able to figure out the existing sound equipment and manipulate the mix, a little at a time, until it was at least presentable. My first recording encounter provided me with all the fundamental knowledge that I need.

The second situation where I was required to use my fundamental knowledge was when I was hired as an audio engineer and was tasked to write musical scores for two short movies filmed by my son. By my own requirements I believed I was not competent, but with the knowledge I gained from my previous encounter I was able to manipulate the sound elements in order to produce ear friendly music and sound effects. In addition to that, I found a way how to remove those unwanted noise in the background from the film and this is very much helpful whenever the background noise affects the film quality.

In taking on these tasks (which at the time I thought were more than I could manage), I found out just how much that my initial recording experience had taught me. With that experience I was able to conclude that you actually learn a lot when you start applying what you’ve learned in real life setting.
