Best Cities To Retire

You’ve probably seen all sorts of “top ten” lists about the best cities for families, for arts and culture, for business, and the like. We’ve put together a similar list to capture what we think are among the ten best cities to retire for seniors.

Issaquah, Washington – This is a wonderful city located just east of Seattle, nestled firmly in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Issaquah is a place where you will find many terrific networks of walking paths, a great selection of restaurants, a wide variety of housing options, and plenty of health and medical services located close by.

Green Valley, Arizona – Here you will find a city with warm weather, clean air, and a wealth of services and activity targeted specifically for the needs of seniors. It is located about 25 miles away from the better known city of Tuscon, but you can easily find everything you need right in Green Valley. From civic organizations to health care to outdoor activities to performing arts and more, it’s all very close at hand.

Boulder, Colorado – This has long been thought of as a college town because it is home to the University of Colorado, but it has one of the very best collections of resources for senior citizens. These include a comprehensive senior services program, extensive public transportation, plenty of outdoor activities both in town and in the surrounding Rocky Mountains, and a full range of health and medical services.

Portland, Maine – Along the scenic east coast of Maine lies the city of Portland, home to an extensive network of senior-friendly services and activities. It has plenty of outdoor opportunities, including walking paths and parks, as well as indoor opportunities, such as restaurants, theaters, and the like. The most unique offering in Portland, though, is the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute located at the University of Southern Maine. A wide ranges of classes and academic courses are offered through the institute (at a very low fee) creating a rich and mentally stimulating environment for seniors.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin – This northern city is not usually the first place that comes to mind in terms of senior living, but it is rapidly becoming a hot spot for seniors who appreciate the wealth of services and opportunities available there. The transportation system is excellent, senior housing is plentiful and affordable, and you will find top notch medical and health facilities as well.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – This city’s history is based in its heritage of steel mills and steel production, but it is also home to a thriving set of services and resources for seniors. It boasts an excellent transportation system with an emphasis on great special access options for those with mobility issues, as well as a great number of top rated medical and health facilities. There is also a very active spiritual community in Pittsburgh, something many seniors rank as among the most important factors for deciding where to live.

Portland, Oregon – Portland  is also a terrific place for seniors to live and ranks among the best cities to retire in the U.S. It consistently ranks among the top twenty cities for seniors across a wide array of surveys and studies. The offerings in Portland include an excellent assortment of senior services, multiple options for special access and transportation, plenty of outdoor activities, and a rich culture and arts community that rivals even those found in much larger cities.

Seattle, Washington – One of three cities on our list located in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle is a thriving center of business, multi-cultural offerings, and a huge selection of senior living and housing options. The transportation system is senior friendly, and the medical care available is among the best in the nation.

Reston, Virginia – This city is located about 20 miles from Washington, D.C., but feels like an entirely different world once you get there. It is a unique community with a huge assortment of services available to residents, including indoor and outdoor sports and fitness facilities, an active arts and culture presence, and comprehensive health and medical services.

Eden Prairie, Minnesota – This is a farm town that’s all grown up, with plenty of services and activities set up especially for the needs of seniors. There are lots of outdoor opportunities such as walking trails, fishing holes, golf, and the like, but since the winter months make it tough to get outside there are plenty of indoor opportunities as well. There is plenty of open space, parks, and a good public transportation system.
